As part of our kiteboarding lesson package with Kite Republic, St Kilda we had membership to the kite club.
This permitted us to attend the kite club weekends that Kite Republic have
throughout the year. This session was at Inverloch which is a town just under two hours drive south of Melbourne.
The idea was to provide an environment to learn and meet
other kiteboarders, as well as experience different areas to kiteboard in.
Having just had our lessons we were keen to get up on the board. A weekend in
Inverloch was a good place for us to practice. We sort of got up on the board
but didn't get very far - this sport is not easy !
It probably wasn't a good idea for me to be learning as well as my daughters as
the immense frustration was a bit off putting for the girls. I really was not
much help for them as I did not know any more than what they did.
Holding the kite in a stable position, putting the board on your feet, powering
up the kite and skiing away it is a complicated set of sequences. Even though I
can waterski and sailboard there is no semblance other than you get wet.
Some instructors were on hand though and were able to provide some attention to
us. It was good to get away and the vibe of the club was fun.
Inverloch is a great place to kiteboard at especially in the directions from East to South East and South West to West. The wind can be very strong, so small kites should be taken as part of your kit especially if winds are predicted to be over 20 knots. The mouth and bay act as a funnel driving it harder. The many sand bars makes it easy to stand up when needs be - like for us beginners !
