Learning how to self rescue a kite
When things go wrong in kiteboarding it is important to know what to do. In our
course we learnt how to self rescue. This might be needed when there is no wind
or there is some form of equipment failure.
The idea is that the kite can be
used like a sailing boat. This exercise was quite a bit of fun, though sorting
out the lines was quite tricky.
We managed to steer ourselves in the water
albeit a short way back to shore.
Our lessons took place in St Kilda with Kite Republic. There was hardly any wind which was good in that it allowed us to practice technique without the risk of things going terribly wrong. Our instructor encouraged us to practice this regularly and when it is honed to do it in gradually stronger winds.
